The Carnival of Venice (Carnevale di Venezia) takes place 40 days before Easter, a final party before Ash Wednesday and the restrictions of Lent. It is celebrated with parades, masquerade balls, entertainment, music, and parties. The Venetian carnival is most famous for its distinctive masks.
The Carnival of Venice is said to start in 1162 to celebrate a victory of the Venice Republic against the Patriarch of Aquileia. The festival became official in the Renaissance and was very famous during the eighteenth century. However, under the rule of the Holy Roman Emperor and later King of Austria, Francis II, the festival was outlawed entirely in 1797 and the use of masks became strictly forbidden. After a long absence, the Carnival was brought to life in 1979. Since then, the Carnival has become a famous symbol of the “floating” city. And nowadays there are approximately 3 million visitors coming to Venice every year for it. It is a huge celebration that goes on for two weeks with many events going on.
THE VENETIAN MASKS
Masks have always been an important feature and a long tradition of the Carnival of Venice. The first documented sources mentioning the use of masks in Venice can be found as far back as the 13th century. By the time of the Renaissance, masks were a fixture of Carnevale celebrations. There are several distinct styles of mask that are worn in the Carnival of Venice. Traditionally, people with different occupations wore different masks.
